Artist Biography - Ed Wolff

Ed Wolff retired to pursue his art career after practicing veterinary medicine

in Missoula, MT for over 40 years.

Ed and his wife Annie have a home and studio in western Montana’s beautiful Bitterroot Valley.

The  scenery and wildlife of the Rocky Mountains offer endless painting opportunities.

Ed is a self-taught artist through the study of artists he admires, books and daily practice. Improvement, he believes, comes through intense focus.

His work is in private collections throughout the United States.

His main subject interests include wildlife and landscapes throughout the west and canyons

and slick rock of the southwest. Recently Ed has developed an interest in

painting birds of North America. Ed is also an accomplished wildlife photographer.

His work has appeared in many periodicals such as Outdoor Life, Ranger Rick, Montana Magazine, Outside Magazine and others. He has authored books about Rocky Mountain elk,

whitetail deer, steamboats on the Upper Missouri River,

and a book about his 40+ year veterinary career.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

I use primarily two techniques when creating a work. While doing multi-day backpacking trips in the remote mountain

back country, I photograph both wildlife and landscape subjects that speak to me, looking for unusual, eye catching lighting. I make a conscious effort to compose the subject in the lens as I foresee it appearing on canvas,

thus no longer anguishing over composition details.

As far as specific painting techniques, I’m in a state of flux.

To gain knowledge, I study the painting methods used by artists I collect and admire, among them are:

Matt Smith, Ralph Oberg, James Reynolds and Julie Jeppsen.

In addition, I copy paintings in my collection to better understand the artists’ method of applying

paint. Consequently, I confused myself by attempting to model my painting technique around several differing styles.

Using what I have absorbed I have come to the conclusion to let the paint flow mindlessly, so to speak,

letting my subconscious thought flow onto the canvas, retaining some small part of what

I have absorbed from my studies.
